Waimate’s Tradition of Care

Since its foundation, Lister Home has been a cornerstone of eldercare in Waimate, South Canterbury. Our principles of integrity, respect, and unwavering dedication ensure every resident feels valued and cherished.

Historical Roots

Lister Home was originally built in 1916 as a maternity home known as Cherryholme. In 1937, Misses Josephine and Edith Hurst purchased it and renamed it Lister House. In 1946, the South Canterbury Hospital Board acquired the house and operated it as a maternity home until the new maternity ward opened at the Waimate hospital in 1948.

In 1950, Dr. Shackleton suggested that the building be used to accommodate the elderly of Waimate in need of care, comfort, and companionship. This idea blossomed into a major community project, involving numerous individuals and groups who contributed through fundraising and practical assistance.

The home underwent major renovations, including the extension of dining and kitchen areas, reconstruction of separate staff quarters, a new heating system, additional toilet facilities, and a complete renovation of the entire property. This transformation provided accommodation for 13 men and women in both double and single rooms.

Lister Home was officially opened by Mr. A.D. Dick MP in 1962, and management transitioned to a committee representing various community sectors. Today, it remains a significant employer in Waimate, deeply integrated into the community.
